On the eve of Connor Jackson’s thirtieth birthday, he looked out onto the silver city and he wondered where she was…where she was and what she was doing. If she was speaking or if she was silent; if she was already in bed or out on the town laughing into the night. He wondered, not for the first time, how he would meet this woman. Claire Harrison. Her name had come to him in a dream, 17 years ago, when he was 13 years old. The dream told him that her name would be Claire Harrison, and he would meet her when he was thirty years old. She was five foot seven, with wavy hair to her shoulders. She had a slender face, dark eyes, soft hands; she smelled of lilac and wooden gates. His dream told him Claire Harrison was an anthropologist, specializing in the Sami people of Finland. She spoke English, French, Finnish, and a touch of Italian. She liked oversized coats, dark chocolate and the smell of rain. Connor Jackson shut his eyes and instantly heard her voice, the way it had sounded 17 years ago. “There you are,” she had said in the dream, like things finally made sense. She was his true love, that much he knew. She wore a blue dress and held a book under her arm. “There you are.” Connor Jackson lived in an apartment overlooking the busy city. He was six feet even and collected first editions of Dante’s Paradiso. He was a curator at a museum, a job he loved. He had been with three other women since he dreamt of Claire Harrison. They were all distant memories now. Once, out of drunken loneliness, four years ago, Connor Jackson had searched Claire’s name on the internet. As the search engine displayed the results, he looked for only the briefest moment. He saw the words anima gemella on the screen before closing the window. Somehow it had seemed like cheating. But tonight, alone in his apartment, Connor Jackson looked out over the silver city and he wondered whether Claire Harrison knew he was coming.
