Caro Emerald – Back It Up

Caro Emerald Back It Up

This song was recommended to me via one Mr. Lloyd Cotler and after listening to it I really enjoyed the modern twist on a 1940s big band vibe. It’s a sunny, light song that makes you want to nod your head or tap a foot. Emerald is a Dutch jazz vocalist and if you like the Adele/Duffy feel, you’ll enjoy this track. Happy Friday!

Kelly Rowland – Commander (new single)

Kelly Rowland

Here is Kelly’s new song. It’s alright, it’s catchy, and I’ll dance to it. She sounds like Rhianna through most of it, maybe it’s the over use of auto-tune. Ladies, if you need heavy computer retooling to help you sing pick another profession or save it for a cool remix. Anyway…she says “act a fool” so it almost makes up for the digitalizing. Enjoy!

New Kelis

Kelis

Kelis leaked two additional tracks today titled “Home” and “Scream”. I can see where “Scream” fits in with what she’s been doing recently but it’s not going to be on repeat. In my opinion, “Home” is definitely the better song. It already has that big club feel and shouldn’t need to be remixed much to be a dancefloor hit. The synth bpm makes the high energy track a perfect 2:45am-er while you’re sucking the last drops of a vodka soda through your straw because you see the bartender leave his well to make rounds collecting drinks and omgyouwon’thaveanyalcoholeveragain. Then he takes it away and you sigh because you’re finally free to fist pump with both hands…which is exactly what this song deserves.

Guest Post by Wesley Della Volla: Chew Lips

Chew Lips

Twitter is full of surprises. What does one do when an unfamiliar indie/elctro-pop group from South London requests to follow you? For me, it means searching YouTube and Last.fm for everything I can find on them.

It only took one quick listen to get me hooked on Chew Lips (the aforementioned band if you hadn’t guessed). The synthpop group — which consists of lead singer Tigs and multi-instrumentalists Will Sanderson and James Watkins — fills a nice spot on my iTunes right in between La Roux, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Sounds. Their songs are comprised of rough, yet catchy synth and bass beats with the lead singer’s raw vocals acting as a counterpoint to weave all the pieces together. Here are a few highlights from their debut album, Unicorn:

My personal favorite off the album, starts with a bass hit right to the head. “Slick” is the perfect adjective for the sound of this track: cool synth beats paired with piano chords and deep bass that build excitement through the whole song.

This song really is synthpop at its finest. Much more of a minimalist sound, built around the synthesizer and Tigs’ vocals. The video.

Not on Unicorn, but a track surely not to be missed. Salt Air was released as an EP in July 2009 and received the remix treatment by JUPITER which resulted in a great electro dance track with a sound that sucks you in from the first note.

If you like what you’ve heard, make sure to check them out on the web and buy the album, which unfortunately isn’t on US iTunes (yet…) but available on amazon and several other sites.

Thank you, Wes, for bringing us another great band from the UK!

Robyn Day!

Robyn

Since Robyn broke the news of her 3 part album project, the internet.com has been buzzing with several tracks that showcase what the Swedish dance-pop sensation has been up to. The first album is due in the spring, with subsequent albums released in the summer and fall/winter. These three songs will be featured on the summer album with the lead single being “Dancing On My Own”, which is 2k10′s version of “Be Mine!”. That’s alright with me. In the darker dance track “None of Dem” she speaks to her boredom of the city and the boys within it. “Fembots” is my current obsession that has one of the smoothest choruses I’ve ever heard, reminding me of the super rhyme flow Peaches gave us in “AA XXX”. Enjoy!

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life

Bright Eyes

Some nights, you fall asleep before me. I listen to the stereo with my head on the pillow and I try not to stare at you. You move in your sleep and every time it makes me smile. But I try not to stare at you. I rest my head on the pillow and I look out past your face to the wall and the curtains and the window. I imagine the stars in the sky, out past the corona of the city. Sometimes a song will come on and the song is so great, and I imagine how much you would love to be hearing this song right now, how much you would like to be here awake with me listening to this song, our eyes full of starlight. In bed I smile at the thought of how much you would love this song. But instead I let you rest and I close my eyes and I try to go to sleep and in my last moments before dreaming I squeeze my fists and I try to remember the song so that in the morning I can find it for you or maybe, if I’m feeling brave, sing it. A little.

How to Dress Well

How to Dress Well

I had a few reservations about posting these two songs. I know they may not be received well and will probably just be labeled as weird, but I figured the reason I started this blog was to bring you all different types of music. Some of that music will not be mainstream, some you will never hear at a party or on the radio.

With that, I bring you How to Dress Well. It’s completely lo-fi, fuzzed out, scratchy, ambient. Making out actual words is not a concern; the priority is with the voices, the actual sound being emitted. It’s almost like these songs are being played from a neighbor’s upstairs bedroom, across the street. You’re getting this muted but beautiful sound distorted by the sun-drenched air, by the rumble of street noise, by the huge oak tree in the front yard, finally making its way to where you are standing. And you stop. And you listen. Because it’s something you’ve never really heard before and something you may never hear again. But in that moment you understand it, and it makes sense.

SHIFTdc: April Showers

April Showers

DJ Mikey Adolphson was kind enough to let me post his SHIFT teaser mix for everyone to enjoy. I gave it a run through last night and was quite impressed. The track list is stocked with songs that are making a dent on my ipod right now, so to have them fused together by seamless transitions makes for a hot 30 minutes. The one thing I would have liked to have heard would have been a re-working of “Fembots”, but since the original is pretty fantastic I’ll let it slide. However, since this is just a teaser maybe I’ll have something to look forward to on April 24th!

Since lala.com is shutting down, please visit the SHIFTdc website to stream and download

Scissor Sisters – Invisible Light (new song)

Scissor Sisters Night Work

The full track listing for Night Work has just come out, along with the cover. They have leaked one song, “Invisible Light”, which is their closing track, and it sounds awesome. It’s a dark dance song featuring Jake Shears’ trademark falsetto in an infectious chorus. It has the Scissor Sisters vibe we love but sounds very current and boasts an incredible finish after the spoken word break down that makes you want to crank your bass. I’m excited to hear what else they have in store for us!
