SHIFT Pregram: Monrose – Like a Lady

Don’t forget that tonight at Cobalt is SHIFT Memorial Mayhem with C&B’s own Wes. To get you in the mood to dance your face off a little musical pregame to kick the night off right.

Monrose, Germany’s hottest girl band are about to release their next album ‘Ladylike’ on June 11th. The album’s first single ‘Like a Lady’ is quite sexy. Clearly these girls aren’t afraid to show you what they think being ladylike really means.

For The Long Weekend: Name the Pet

Those quirky Swedes they know how to make pop music, not to mention well priced do-it-yourself furnishings. Name the Pet is no exception and has been bouncing around my iPod since Christmas. So with the release of ‘Falling’, co-written by Stefan from The Sound Of Arrows, as a single in Sweden last week I feel now is a good enough time to introduce C&B to ‘Name the Pet’. Take a listen to my top 4 tracks from the self titled EP.

Weekend Pregame: Róisín Murphy – Momma’s Place

The Irish indie star is incredibly creative and one not to shy away from a bit of trouble or mischief. ’Momma’s Place’ was written as a song for her new child and as a bit of a warning. All I can say to her is, good luck when she tries to slip anything by her momma.

Fresh Brewed: Grum

Grum

Heartbeats could easily be one of the best albums of the 80′s, except for the fact it was made in 2010. With hints of “Batman”, “The Neverending Story”, “Goonies”, and a dash of “Nightrider’s” sexy vibe, it’s a soundtrack to the 80′s as seen from today.

‘Fashion’ is hands down my favorite track on the album. I think of it as RuPaul’s ‘Supermodel’ re-imagined. Not everyone may agree, including Josh and the BF; who made it quite clear how he feels about this idea, “Such a thing, does not and will never exist. WERQ!” Nonetheless we are big fans.

SHIFT: Memorial Mayhem TeaserMix and DJing this Saturday

SHIFTdc

Barbecues, drinks, dancing, and a little bit too much fun. These are the four things I think of when I think of the long Memorial Day weekend holiday. So come to a place where the music will be great and the drinks are strong and cheap!

SHIFT this month is smack dab in the middle of the holiday weekend and is ready to serve up a hearty helping of MAYHEM to celebrate the start of summer. C&B’s very own Wesley D will be kicking off the night upstairs at 10pm, with a healthy dose of C&B favorites and electro-pop that is sure to get you jumping around and start your night off right. Resident DJ, DJ MAJR, plans to give you everything you need to shake loose, dance your face off, and lose the stress of having to work without a holiday weekend since the Snowpocalypse. Zach Rosen of Black Cat’s Homo/Sonic will keep the party going downstairs with a dose of fresh indie and pop music.

So head over to Cobalt (17th and R Streets, NW) for SHIFT’s Memorial Mayhem take over. Doors open at 10, and all-night drink specials include $3 PBRs and $5 import beers and rail drinks.

To get a taste of what’s in store check out the Mayhem Teaser Mix from DJ MAJR.

Also, I just listened to “Vanity” and although it takes quite a bit to shock me, there is a line that literally made my jaw drop (about 40 seconds into the song). Dirrty Xtina is definitely back.

Lady Gaga Unreleased Tracks

Lady Gaga

Here are two more Lady Gaga tracks that did not make either album. “Then You’d Love Me” is the dancier of the two tracks, it’s a little stuck in the 80s, and wouldn’t really fit in with her previous songs. (Why does it remind me of “I Think We’re Alone Now? I think it may be the bass line during the verses.) “Greatest” is a mid-tempo cut that employs some heavy auto-tune (which I hate because we know Gaga can sing). Lyrically, it’s on par with “Brown Eyes” as one of the sappier Gaga songs she’s written but lacks in the emotional depth of previous slower songs. But for any Gaga fan, here are two songs you can add to your collection. Enjoy!

Locnville – 6 Second Poison

Already certified “Gold” in their native South African, and freshly signed to Sony Music Europe, Locnville can only get bigger from here. Locnville is made up of twin brothers Andrew and Brian who have lived most of their lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

The two have been making music together since they were 8 and have drawn influence from both South Africa and the United States. Today they are focusing on a retro-electro and hip-hop influenced sound that has led to a very unique and undeniably catchy sound.

Taio Cruz feat. Ke$ha – Dirty Picture

English singer-songerwriter, Taio Cruz, fresh off his first number one hit in the U.S has teamed up with the ever klassy Ke$ha to try and land his next one. I will be the first to admit I do really like the song, and I also really like Taio Cruz. It’s a shame he needs to do collaborations to get noticed here in the U.S. His album ‘Rokstarr’ drops on June 1st, 2010.

Don’t let the soft start to the song fool you, this is one explosive dance song.
