Martin Solveig (feat. Martina of Dragonette) – Hello (video)

Fantastic video! Even better song.

(To be very honest this post was meant to be about Martin, but quickly became all about Dragonette.) IMHO Dragonette is one of the best bands in the world right now, and severely underrated here in the US. I am happy to see Martina getting a lot of exposure for herself and the band with her collaborations with DJ/producers. This is the second time Martina and Martin have come together to make a great song and video. It was apparently shot live in front of a real audience at Roland Garros during the French Open. This video is funny, quirky and perfect for a summer song.

Dragonette’s single ‘Pick up the Phone’ is the iTunes single of the week, so listen to it below, then go get it for FREE from iTunes! Their latest album is also on $5.99, well worth it.

Scissor Sisters – Night Work (full album)

Night Work

Scissor Sisters’ fourth studio album, Night Work, is out today!

Already receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Spin, The New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, Access Hollywood and others, Rolling Stone proclaims “The beats still have that mirror-ball gleam, the slinky tunes still lodge themselves in your cranium, and Jake Shears’ lyrics are still laced with not-quite-subtle sex talk.” Filter raves “No surprise — it’s a dance album filled to the brim with beats that could make even a corpse twitch,” while The New York Times praise Night Work is “a return to Scissor Sisters’ dingier clubland roots, before the band became a chart topper in Europe and a cult favorite in the United States… It’s still fun, but it’s dirtier fun.”

Grab Night Work from now through Friday and get your July started off with a bang! After Friday, you can grab your copy over at iTunes. Enjoy!

Some sleezy things…

black and white couple

I’ve been sitting on these tracks for a while now. Sometimes you just need a little sexy song to help you though a Monday. These two songs just have that slick feel to them, the sultry female vocals against a rolling production that just screams dim lit, back room, smoke filled, fishnets, sideways glances. Anyway, I figured these tracks go perfectly with the DC weather today, hot, sticky, and make you want to take your top off.

Thanks for the tip on The Pierces, Clint, it’s a good one!

Example – ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ album review

Won’t Go Quietly is the first album I can remember being THIS excited for in quite a long time. With past albums I have been excited for I scour the web and find nearly all the tracks before the release, know exactly what I’m getting before I buy it. Not with Won’t Go Quietly, I wanted to wait, to really enjoy that moment when all the anticipation pays off. Buy it, have it in hand (direct to my iPhone counts!) and listen to it straight through in proper order, take in the album as it is meant to be. Now, sadly sometimes albums aren’t everything you hope for, the hype and excitement are actually better than the album, but that is definitely not the case with this album. It is everything I wanted, even if it is not what I expected.

Example has done no small feat, he has made a convert of me when it comes to Dubstep. This is mostly do to the tracks ‘Dirty Face’, ‘Sick Note’ and ‘See the Sea’.  My friend Eph from over at PandaToes, and I have been having a spirited musical debate for months now about Dubstep. I appreciate it, but most of what I hear is just interesting noise at best. Where Eph loves dubstep and, at every chance he gets, tries his best to help me see it how great it is. For me to make it something great you need to include, heaven forbid, a melody! Something that will draw people to it, and help them to connect to it. In other words, breathe musical life into it. Won’t Go Quietly equally proves both sides of our argument. Dubstep is great and will be a dynamic influence on music, but the only way it can be really great is to accentuate equally great music to get to its full potential

Blurring the line between what genres are and what they should sound like. It is an album that is equal parts hip-hop, electro, pop, dubstep and rock. And I wanted to give it a proper track-by-track dissection, but there are 16 tracks, and what lovely tracks they are, which may be a bit much. So here are a few stand out tracks in addition to the previous four tracks we have talked about on C&B.

‘Time Machine’ – This is what Timbaland should sound like, if he were to make anything new sounding since Future Sex/Love Sounds. This song has a strut and sexy vibe all its own. Calvin Harris helped to create a fantastic disco tinged dance track that works perfectly with Examples voice and styling.

‘Last One Standing’ – Has all the fun and exuberance of the late 80’s dance pop, I have to be honest in reminds me of Whitney Houston’s dance tracks from that time period. This is a VERY good thing. Perfect follow up as the 4th single. It is all about going out with your favorite partner in crime and seeing just how much trouble you can get away with.

‘Two Lives’ – A big, expressive rock anthem that is all about balancing the halves of who Example is. The person we all see, and the person he is in private. Even for those of us who aren’t public figures, it is an idea I know I think about quite a bit. How to balance who I am and who others want and expect me to be.

‘Sick Note’ – Stay out later than you should on a school night? We have all been there. Infectious, dancey and something different from your normal electro dance out there with Dubstep seeping in over the edges to make something very unique.

‘Girl Can’t Dance’ – Slick and sexy rock infused dance. It’s the lyrics for me on this one. “It’s such a pity/Girl you can’t dance/Yes you’re really gorgeous/ Very nearly flawless/But why didn’t you ma teach you to dance?”

My rating is a perfect 10/10. It is really a brilliant album that has pushed my musical tastes and boundaries. One of the best albums of 2010, which is why it’s currently charting at #2 on the UK chart.  And I do really want everyone to support him, so if you are in UK head over iTunes or the local HMV and buy it. If you are stateside, head over to Amazon.com, it is worth the cost to have it imported.

As a treat to loyal readers I am going to share the entire album for just 24 hours, because I do really want everyone support Example and go buy the album and get excited about a fantastic musician and his even better music.

Lovers Electric – Whenever

Emotional electronic music at its very best. Lovers Electric is an Australian husband and wife duo of Eden and David.  Their acclaim in their native land is starting to spill over to distant shores in the UK and hopefully the US as well. They are able to blend the best of nouveau-80′s electronic music, with deeply personal and uplifting lyrics. I was pretty much instantly hooked on ‘Whenever’, and as a lyrics man fell in love with its words.

They are hard at work on their debut album Impossible Dreams, which judging by their MySpace offerings will be full of electro gems.

Annie Lennox – Dolce and Gabbana Summer 2011

I’m not sure how I got so lucky today, but here is Dolce and Gabbana’s Summer 2011 men’s collection put to the music of Annie Lennox. And it’s not just her blasting through a soundsystem, it’s her live. Just her and a piano. Two of my favorite things on this planet came together for 17 minutes and 29 seconds of pure creative genius. The video is in two parts, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Goldfrapp: My Top 8

So I finally was able to see Alison Goldfrapp live in all her glory last night and it was amazing! From the jacket made of VHS tape to the gold lamé disco-tastic get ups for the rest of her band, it was a treat for the eyes, as much as one for the ears. In honor of my first ever Goldfrapp show, and DC’s as well, I have decided to share with you all my 8 favorite Goldfrapp songs. (I decided a top 5 was just not enough, 8 may not be also) You may also be surprised that even with all the glam and disco some of my very favorite songs are the ethereal electronic gems where Alison’s remarkable voice pulls you in.

My bad…

Sorry for the bad links on the Sara song below…the audio and download have both been fixed now. Enjoy!

Sara Bareilles – Gravity (a cappella version)

Sara Bareilles

Oh, “Gravity”, how you’ve haunted me from your first opening notes. This version was my introduction to a song that has been played a countless number of times over the past four years. Then I heard the album version and I oscillate between the two…there is a unique feeling that each brings to my ears. For unknown reasons, I’ve waited a while to post this song, but the past 24 hours have solidified that this is the exact right time. Many of you who have bought Bareilles’ album have heard it, but may not have heard this a cappella version. Everything you hear are voices. Everything. It’s quite incredible. Listen to it with headphones so the sound is closest to your ears, you’ll be glad you did.
