iSH – Priceless (music video)

Hey everyone out there on the interwebs! Just back from my week in the sun in the Canary Islands, unfortunately it wasn’t all fun. Just 2 days of fun in the sun after 5 VERY long days of field work.

I will try to get some new music from my back log of new music up as soon as I have reacclimated to East Coast time! In the mean time, something sunny & fun for the time before my tan quickly fades and summer starts to come to a close.

Sun Airway – Put the Days Away

Sun Airways

Sun Airway has just announced the they will be releasing their debut album Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier on October 26th and this, “Put the Days Away”, is a standout on that album. I’m not sure what I feel when I listen to it, the darkness of the lyrics (“Trying not to die is so taxing”, “Waking up is an exercise in trust”) are shrouded in a light, airy sound that seems to roll along effortlessly. So, it kinda makes me get all heady about life yet want to jump into a pile of autumn leaves and lay there believing the song is in the air itself. To make all this happen, Philadelphia musician Jon Barthmus has taken cues from the pop side of Merriweather Post Pavilion and fused them together with his own brand of weird sounds to create a wonderful track and record.

The Hoosiers – Choices

Make bad commercials or suffer the consequences of a Hong Kong mob syndicate. Clever, quirky and creative are the three words I think of when I see the video for the The Hoosiers ‘Choices’. This makes complete sense from the band that claims in makes “Odd Pop”, drawing on influences ranging from the  The Cure, Jeff Buckley, The Flaming Lips to XTC. I will leave you to decide if ‘Choices’ is indeed “Odd Pop”, or just great pop.

Sara Bareilles – Hold My Heart

Sara kaleidoscope heart

Sara Bareilles’ second album, Kaleidoscope Heart, is set to be released on September 7th. She stated on her website the reason behind the album’s title: “I picked out the name of the record months before I even finished writing the songs. I love the imagery of those words, and they’re really representative of how I envision my heart. It’s a colorful but fragmented, ever-changing sum of all the bits and pieces that make it up. A Kaleidoscope is the tool that helps make sense of the mess. Or at least makes it nice to look at.”

Here we have a leak of one of the songs titled “Hold My Heart”. It’s a piano driven midtempo ballad with those classic heartbroken Sara lyrics…”I wanna tell you so | before the sun goes dark | how to hold my heart | cause I don’t want to let go | let go, let go of you”. Her voice is clear and on point, something we expect from her, and if the two songs I’ve heard from the album are any indication on what the rest will sound like I don’t believe we’ll be seeing the dreaded sophomore slump from Ms. Bareilles.

Scissor Sisters – Paul McCartney

SS

In anticipation for the Scissor Sisters concert tonight I’m bringing you my favorite song of theirs. “Paul McCartney” is a wonderful romp that is pretty darn infectious. It has trademark Jake Shears falsetto, but not too much, the classic 80s sound, and a chorus that’ll get stuck in your head for days. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and if you’re going to the concert tonight, see ya there!!

Hi all, hope your weekend was fantastic! I’m going to post a hot little song later today, but first wanted to bring your attention to a podcast from DC resident Ben Carver who does a monthly episode featuring music and commentary. In his fourth, Ben features artists that recently visited or will soon play in the DC area. Even if you do not live here, I still suggest listening in as one might be in your area soon.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – a tribute

Sadly Charlie Haddon, lead singer of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, has taken his own life at the age of 22.  In honor of the great work he and the band have done, take a look and listen to a few of their videos. I am truly sad to hear this news, it is sad when anyone takes their own life, but even more sad when someone as talented and with as much potential as Charlie ends their life all too soon.

And the very last video the group created for their single ‘Jackson’s Last Stand’

I do truly hope they release their debut album in October, as planned, a fitting tribute to a very talented artist.

Weekend Pregame: Dragonette – My Things

Dragonette can really do no wrong. ‘My Things’, a fresh new track off their Mixin’ To Thrill, remix album, is essential Dragonette and something new all at once.  I still again stand by my assertion that they are the best, and sadly underrated, band in the world. Consistently producing quality, energetic and original music. They are also one the best live acts I have had the pleasure of seeing, exuding energy and enthusiasm.

I Am Noxious – I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas cover)

I Am Noxious

The original “I’ve Got A Feeling” is probably the most overplayed song of the past five years to the point where I audibly groan when it comes on. Sure, after a few drinks you can help but bounce a little but it really is an awful song. Don’t just tell me the days of the week, I know the order (although I don’t think Fergie spells in this song, so that’s a plus). But I digress. However, its redeeming quality comes in the form of I Am Noxious who has taken the track and stripped it down adding believability to the song that the original was lacking. He injects into what was a fluffy pop track some soul and heart taking out the silly lines and concentrating on the anticipation of gearing up for what could be a good, good night. He also samples “Meet Me Halfway” in the mid-8 which fits in perfectly with the tone and musicality of the song. In the end he takes a flat, over-produced track and creates something relevant and tangible and that is what makes a good, good artist.
