Hurts – Happiness (Album Review)

Hurts is a duo from the current British creative hotbed of Manchester, made up of singer Theo Hutchcraft and synth player Adam Anderson. Noticed early on by Guardian.co.uk and featured as its “Band of the Day” in July 2009. Hurts also garnered the very impressive nod from BBC as the #4 act to watch in its “Sound of 2010″ poll. All of this formal praise and acclaim aside, what really matters is that they live up to the hype. Let me assure you that they do much more than live up to their hype, they blow all expectations out of the water. From intensely vivid lyrics, that pull at your emotions from every direction; to music that is all-consuming and richly layered, Hurts creates music that is simply this: GORGEOUS.

I was fortunate to get the album while traveling in Spain, which with plenty of long plane rides, enabled me to listen to the album quite thoroughly, but didn’t leave me the time to craft the proper post the whole album deserved. So after some time to settle back into DC, I am able to share Happiness with you all.  We have showed you the visually stunning videos and beautiful singles, ‘Better Than Love‘ and ‘Wonderful Life‘, which unlike some artists, were by no means the extent of the quality music on the album.

Unspoken‘ – Gut-wrenching, honest lyrics about love’s light slipping away. Filled with violins, and a rich orchestral feeling, that is by far more than one would ever expect from a duo that is one half synth. “But it’s the same old situation/We made it through this far./Oh./We watched the rockets kiss the sky./I saw the flames burn out in your eyes./Nothing that I do/Will ever be enough for you/Whatever I do, whatever I do./Take me as I am/I’ll never be the other man.”

Devotion‘ – All the things never uttered, but certainly always thought at times in any relationship. How do I keep my devotion during the times less happy? Theo and Kylie’s voice are perfect counterpoints, haunting and full of emotion. “Devotion save me now/i don’t wanna stray from the hallow ground/i’ll turn temptation down/i’m asking you to take me to safety this time”

Silver Lining‘ – The story of intense loyalty and devotion are beautifully told with lyrics as beautiful as provoking. Music tinged with hope and faint sorrow. “When the World surrounds you, I’ll make it go away/Paint the sky with silver lining./I will try to save you, cover up the grey/With silver lining./Now there’s no way back from the things you’ve done/I know it’s too late to stop the setting sun./You see the shadows in the distant light”

Happiness explores the deeper, more subtle meanings of what it means to have happiness and to be happy. There are songs on this album that examine the intense devotion and protection that comes with deep love. Songs that take through the pain and agony of realizing the love you had is lost. There are songs that remind you that through the pain, devotion, and struggle, it is in the middle of all this that you have happiness, hopefully, you are able to realize it.

Few album are made with this level of care and talent and well worth the $25.00 import price, and absolutely worth the £6.99. PLEASE support these guys, they are incredible and well worth the investment.

Kylie vs. Katy – Get Outta My Teenage Dream (MD Officials mashup)

Kylie Katy

I needed something to get me through the post-lunch slump that is further exacerbated by the fact it’s only Wednesday and has been rainy four days straight. Sick of it! ANYway, I figured if I feel this way someone else out there might too. I put this song on and it definitely lifted my mood a bit. I love good mashups, and this is a great one. I enjoy both originals and they do a great job of stitching them together to up the beat of “Teenage Dream” while injecting the infectious instrumentals of “Get Outta My Way”. Close your office door, put your headphones on, and slip into that teenage dream where work is a lifetime away.

Rosanna – Waterfalls

Time to clear out the back log from the past 2 months (WOW September FLEW by), sorry everyone. Between my new project at work and the crazy international travel schedules I have been unable to keep up with the new music I have been finding. Hopefully once the glut of music is taken care of, I can focus on scouring the interwebs for the best new music I can find.

One perk of my delay is the official music video for Rosanna’s debut single ‘Waterfalls’

Former member of the teenage girl band Play, first signed to Columbia records at the bright age of 13, she has toured with Destinys Child and all over the US. This was many years ago and since has returned home to Sweden, to study music and craft her own unique sound of beautiful pop.

She released her debut single ‘Waterfalls’ in August, on Popjustice Hi-Fi record label. Rosanna is the first musician offered up on the record label Popjustice Hi-Fi recently formed by Popjustice. Chances are if you like Robyn and the other fantastic pop coming from Sweden these day you will also enjoy Rosanna.

Kylie Minogue – BEHIND THE SCENES of Get Outta My Way

Okay everyone out there, in case you hadn’t noticed we LOVE us some Ms. Minogue here in this small corner of the interwebs. Also one of us is a filmmaker, so double geek-out over this clip! It is great to see a behind the scenes video that actually gets at the work, talent and creativity that goes into making music videos….make that…GREAT music videos. Not the ones made popular by rappers circa mid 2000′s.

For me my favorite bit is around 8:52 where Kylie playfully whispers “this is now the time when everyone goes a bit silly.” Any who has ever worked til ungodly hours in the morning on a film shoot, or anything with that intensity knows her state of mind, which is very close to pudding at that point. Didn’t think I could find her more endearing or lovely, but it happened.

Yelle – La Musique

Not sure what more to say then, NEW YELLE!!

A very different sound than her last album Pop Up, which I adore from start to finish, but with just enough of the familiar sound we all know and love. Below is the mini-mix for the upcoming EP from Kitsuné

Fresh Brewed: Bright Light Bright Light

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnojMbHB-M0&feature=player_embedded

Bright Light Bright Light is able to create something with more depth than expected from electro-pop. The Love Pt. 2 EP in just two songs is able to run the gambit of the emotions love can provoke. ‘Love Pt. 2′ overwhelms you with the carefree exuberance that comes with realizing you are able to feel love’s faint flutter in your heart again. The B-side, ‘Cry At Films’, takes you to an earnest and strikingly honest place where old love is rehashed and dissected with a subtly not easily created. Both tracks are very much worthy of being singles and quite a fantastic showing for the newly minted Popjustice Hi-Fi record label formed by the influential British music blog, Popjustice.

And as someone known for my penchant for tears during movies and particular TV shows, I find a great connection to this song. Give ‘Cry at Films’ at least two listens, one for the music and once again to get a full appreciation of the lyrics.

Support Bright Light Bright Light and PopJustice Hi-Fi and pick up your very own copy of the Love, Pt. 2 EP. Starting today it is available on iTunes and most other digital destinations.

Glee – Britney/Brittany

Glee

The highly anticipated epidode of Glee featuring Britney Spears airs tomorrow! She comes to us in a dream sequence when the kids are visiting the dentist, who is Emma’s new love interest played by Uncle Jesse (John Stamos). I’m glad they’re highlighting Brittany as she has consistently delivered some of the best and most quotable one-liners on the show. After hearing the songs I’m looking forward to it, especially the Toxic number. Hopefully Spears’ performance won’t cause a toothache. Get it? The lineup tonight is:

…Baby One More Time
Oops!… I Did It Again
Toxic
Stronger
Me Against the Music
I’m a Slave 4 U
The Only Exception – Paramore

Ed Drewett – Champagne Lemonade

Ed Drewett is an up-and-coming British singer. He was responsible for the only enjoyable bit of the otherwise horrid Professor Green hit, ‘I Need You Tonight‘. Which then prompted me to search the interwebs for anything by this briefly seen singer, which led to nothing for months, until his debut single, ‘Champagne Lemonade’, starting leaking.

Ed sounds like a pleasant mix between Just Jack and Frankmusik. High energy electro pop, that is a bit of a mad rush of sound, which is very much like some of my favorite Frankmusik tracks. If this is the sound he has to offer, I am very excited to hear more.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – Paris (Ooh la la)

grace potter paris

This song defies you to stay seated. It’s definitely one of those get-up-and-dance-with-your-hands-above-your-head kind of songs. The sound is definitely very current but the production has distorted the vocals to make it sound like she’s singing her face off on a 70s record…it’s that slightly scratchy sound that makes it so damn sexy. From the “Uhh” that kicks off this track you know she means business. The video is a black and white throwback to the burlesque shows in Paris which display her brash confidence and control, making the song all the more appealing. This is really my first taste of the 27 year old Potter, but I will definitely be back for more. Ohh la la indeed.

Weekend Pregame: Kaskade – Fire In Your New Shoes (ft. Martina of Dragonette)

Sorry I sat on this one so long everyone. Top 5 songs of the summer hands down, and one I assumed I had already posted about weeks ago. Fortunately for you all I remembered I hadn’t.

Seductive, sensual and incredibly talented – Martina is “Sex Appeal” personified and flat out gorgeous. Kaskade takes a bit of a harder, rockier edge with his latest creation and Martina adds the perfect amount of Siren seduction to the dark and alluring bass heavy beats.
