Saturday night I had the pleasure of opening for the second-to-last SHIFT ever! (Very sad actually) It was a night full of superheros, bubbles and glitter of epic proportions! Weekend Pregame: Rai Knight – Let Me Go

I don’t know too much about Rai Knight, but what I do know is that I am in love with this track. Rai Knight’s vocals reminds me of Martina from Dragonette, crystal clear, yet just a little edgy. Something strong and full of energy hides just under the pristine surface. Slick, clean and not overdone music produced by We Are The Tay. Really is quite the special collaboration. Musically it lands somewhere between the simple rhythmic sounds of 90′s R&B, indie-pop and electronica.

Well we know Crackney will not be coming out with any new music soon, which is a travesty for the whole world. (I blame you Bobby) So thankfully the insanely talented Penguin Prison, aka Chris Glover, decided to create this amazing mashup of the Whitney hit ‘Million Dollar Bill’ with his latest track ‘Multi-Millionaire’. He seamlessly pulls the two tracks together, creating a cool, soulful bit of pop amazingness.

I have never wanted to be a Canadian as much as right now. Kay’s debut EP is for sale in her native land, but not here in the US. Horribly unfair if you think about it, no? Well thankfully the Dr Rosen Rosen produced track ‘M.A.J.O.R.’ has made it to the interwebs and to my iTunes library. Kay still brings that same brash and energetic feeling from ‘My Name is Kay‘, while the Dr. brings slick and sexy production to make something so ear-catching it has been on loop a lot over the past few days. Mark my words Kay is definitely MAJOR. Now i just need to get my fingers on the EP.

Martin Solveig – The Night Out Ft. Thomas Mars (of Phoenix)

Martin Solveig is the man who gave us ‘Hello‘ and ‘Boy & Girls‘ and has now given us his new LP Smash. The French Super-DJ/Producer has made the album a huge collaborative effort with Dragonnette and Kele of Block Party with guest appearances from Dev and rising British talent Sunday Girl. Martin’s sound is a mix of funk and house with a very strong vocal presence in all his music. The music is usually driving, dance inducing and meant for late night, so for me it is quite nice to see something from him that is a little more laid back. Surprisingly the track that does it is the one titled ‘The Night Out’, it is a wonderful merging of alt. pop sounds with Martin’s amazing dance sensibility.

There is a way to tell the story of going out on a Friday night, and there is a way to tell it well. To use subtleties and wit to really convey the emotions that go on behind the superficial urge to drink Tequila til you hit the floor. The Wombats tell the story better than anyone I have heard in recent memory. ”shut up and move with me move with me or, or get out of my face/I didn’t queue for an hour to leave straight away/shut up and stay with me, stay with me or, *or* let go off my hand/the lasers fill our minds with empty plans.” Visual and emotional story telling laid over energetic and infectious rock.

Their whole album This Modern Glitch is full of the same intensity and lyrical skill.
