Weekend Pregame: The Ting Tings – Hands

The dreaded sophomore slump and living up to your own hype. These are things that face any band, let alone one that splashed onto the music scene as the Ting Tings did in 2008. Thankfully the duo has not let us down! The very first single off their upcoming album is more than worthy of the buzz and acclaim the band has achieved with their debut album. ‘Hands’ is all you could want from a lead track for you sophomore album. ‘Hands’ has the same sensibility that drove people to the sound of their previous album; energetic and a chorus that is meant to be chanted back while swinging you hands to clap to the beat.

Cassette Kids – Insomnia

This track is perfectly fitting as I have yet to adjust to the 5 hour time change from being in Spain, and a 6 hour change is just a week away!

Cassette Kids are currently hiding out somewhere in New York City, to, as Dan S. put it on Facebook, “take on the US, tour, live & write.”  Which, must mean also releasing more music here in the States! Hopefully along with a tour stop here in DC!

‘Insomnia’ is by far one of my most played tracks off the Nothing on TV LP, I seem to find myself coming back to it over and over again.

Savage Skulls and Douster (ft. Robyn) – Bad Gal

All quiet from Robyn for nearly 5 years, and now she is everywhere. Please note, this is by no way a complaint!

Now a new track is hitting the webs with her vocals lent to it. “Bad Gal” is taken from the Savage Skulls & Douster EP Get Rich or High Tryin. “Bad Gal” definitely pushes the pop boundary with its underground sound bleeding through the edges.

Lady Gaga new songs (live)

gaga

Oh, hey Lady G. Thanks for teasing us with a few new songs! These came from one of her live shows, so I apologize for the quality. “You and I” seems to be a bit influenced by her recent collaboration with Sir Elton John. Definitely more of a rock-style song than the electropop influence on her Monster addition. And she always goes back to that bit of bluegrass twang she gave us with “Brown Eyes”. The other song is “Livin on the Radio” which is the closest thing we get to a full on Gaga ballad. I actually like this one a lot as it showcases that great live voice. If she keeps this for her album I hope it stays stripped down, minimalistic, and vulnerable. It would be nice to have that moment on her record. Enjoy!

iSH – Priceless (music video)

Hey everyone out there on the interwebs! Just back from my week in the sun in the Canary Islands, unfortunately it wasn’t all fun. Just 2 days of fun in the sun after 5 VERY long days of field work.

I will try to get some new music from my back log of new music up as soon as I have reacclimated to East Coast time! In the mean time, something sunny & fun for the time before my tan quickly fades and summer starts to come to a close.

Sun Airway – Put the Days Away

Sun Airways

Sun Airway has just announced the they will be releasing their debut album Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier on October 26th and this, “Put the Days Away”, is a standout on that album. I’m not sure what I feel when I listen to it, the darkness of the lyrics (“Trying not to die is so taxing”, “Waking up is an exercise in trust”) are shrouded in a light, airy sound that seems to roll along effortlessly. So, it kinda makes me get all heady about life yet want to jump into a pile of autumn leaves and lay there believing the song is in the air itself. To make all this happen, Philadelphia musician Jon Barthmus has taken queues from the pop side of Merriweather Post Pavilion and fused them together with his own brand of weird sounds to create a wonderful track and record.

The Hoosiers – Choices

Make bad commercials or suffer the consequences of a Hong Kong mob syndicate. Clever, quirky and creative are the three words I think of when I see the video for the The Hoosiers ‘Choices’. This makes complete sense from the band that claims in makes “Odd Pop”, drawing on influences ranging from the  The Cure, Jeff Buckley, The Flaming Lips to XTC. I will leave you to decide if ‘Choices’ is indeed “Odd Pop”, or just great pop.

Sara Bareilles – Hold My Heart

Sara kaleidoscope heart

Sara Bareilles’ second album, Kaleidoscope Heart, is set to be released on September 7th. She stated on her website the reason behind the album’s title: “I picked out the name of the record months before I even finished writing the songs. I love the imagery of those words, and they’re really representative of how I envision my heart. It’s a colorful but fragmented, ever-changing sum of all the bits and pieces that make it up. A Kaleidoscope is the tool that helps make sense of the mess. Or at least makes it nice to look at.”

Here we have a leak of one of the songs titled “Hold My Heart”. It’s a piano driven midtempo ballad with those classic heartbroken Sara lyrics…”I wanna tell you so | before the sun goes dark | how to hold my heart | cause I don’t want to let go | let go, let go of you”. Her voice is clear and on point, something we expect from her, and if the two songs I’ve heard from the album are any indication on what the rest will sound like I don’t believe we’ll be seeing the dreaded sophomore slump from Ms. Bareilles.
