I have crawled into bed at 11 p.m., at 1:15 a.m. and 3. I’ve napped at 10 in the morning and at 2 in the afternoon. Fallen into a deep slumber after dinner and slept until dawn. I’ve experienced the most isolated hours offered to us, those at which time barely touches, when the tv shows drift away and the radio plays silence. When all social media turns in for the night and words fall out of their books. You know the ones. Those hours when true solitude is possible, when the only thing to do is sit and await the world’s return. In those hours, the mind starts to wonder slowly and on a recent such hour mine twisted to the formation of a song that was possibly conceived in such temporal isolation. But seemingly alert as I was I didn’t get past the first minute – this song of youngness – because before I’d finished playing it, the soporific rise and fall of the morning’s first passing car streamed through my bedroom window and I succumbed to another one of the day’s secluded moments.

Scala & Kolancy Brothers
Apr 27

I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Scala & Kolancy Brothers concert Monday night at the 9:30 Club. I first heard about the Belgian girls’ choir, conducted by Stijn Kolacny and arranged and accompanied by Steven Kolacny on the piano, like most people after watching the trailer to The Social Network where they do a beautiful cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”. The concert was beautiful, featuring about 24 voices singing in flawless harmony. It was quite incredible to hear the sharpness of their phrasing, which only highlighted their talent as well as their dedication to perfection. I have posted a .zip file of a few of my favorites but they have many other covers floating around the interwebs. If you do enjoy them, please support the group by purchasing their music.

Adele covers

Here are two great covers of my favorite songs from Adele’s new album, 21. Eli Lieb is back with his wonderfully distinct voice singing the most heartbreaking track, “Someone Like You”. Also, John Legend goes acapella on us covering “Rolling in the Deep”. Hope you enjoy them, sorry for the lack of postings lately, we should be back on track soon!

On a personal note, thanks for everyone that came out to hear us spin at SHIFT this past Saturday. It was a fantastic time and we’re looking forward to doing it again soon!

Ok so I’m not telling you where I found this cover, however if you download the song it won’t take Encyclopedia Brown to figure out this mystery. Regardless, it’s a good one. Fay Wolf takes a classic song and “makes it her own” (ugh, I hate that phrase) slowing it down and stripping it of its 1986 sounding roots. And on a personal note, after listening to this song my friend Mikey may have to rethink his funeral playlist we’ve all heard so much about

My friend Devon sent me this fun track from his a capella group, The Wesleyan Spirits, covering “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga. Heard of it? They do a great job with pretty strong vocals. And now that Glee is swinging back to more a capella this is a perfect time to introduce you to the real deal. Their fall concert is this Thursday at 7PM, however if you’re not near the campus you can check out their live webcast here.
If you would like to hear more from them, please head on over to Amazon or iTunes and support The Wesleyan Spirits.

The original “I’ve Got A Feeling” is probably the most overplayed song of the past five years to the point where I audibly groan when it comes on. Sure, after a few drinks you can help but bounce a little but it really is an awful song. Don’t just tell me the days of the week, I know the order (although I don’t think Fergie spells in this song, so that’s a plus). But I digress. However, its redeeming quality comes in the form of I Am Noxious who has taken the track and stripped it down adding believability to the song that the original was lacking. He injects into what was a fluffy pop track some soul and heart taking out the silly lines and concentrating on the anticipation of gearing up for what could be a good, good night. He also samples “Meet Me Halfway” in the mid-8 which fits in perfectly with the tone and musicality of the song. In the end he takes a flat, over-produced track and creates something relevant and tangible and that is what makes a good, good artist.

Example is set to release his 4th single, ‘Last Ones Standing’ from his hit album Won’t Go Quietly on September 13th. This song is one of my favorite on the album, though to be honest the album is so good nearly all the songs fall into that category. Example himself released on his personal blog today a cover by Ed Sheeran of the latest single, and it’s quite amazing. For me the lyrics were already poignant, subtle in the memories it can universally evoke about best friends and the times you share with them. This new cover completely changes the tone of the song, from light and fun to something much more personal and touching. All in all a beautiful cover of a fantastic song.
