I have crawled into bed at 11 p.m., at 1:15 a.m. and 3. I’ve napped at 10 in the morning and at 2 in the afternoon. Fallen into a deep slumber after dinner and slept until dawn. I’ve experienced the most isolated hours offered to us, those at which time barely touches, when the tv shows drift away and the radio plays silence. When all social media turns in for the night and words fall out of their books. You know the ones. Those hours when true solitude is possible, when the only thing to do is sit and await the world’s return. In those hours, the mind starts to wonder slowly and on a recent such hour mine twisted to the formation of a song that was possibly conceived in such temporal isolation. But seemingly alert as I was I didn’t get past the first minute – this song of youngness – because before I’d finished playing it, the soporific rise and fall of the morning’s first passing car streamed through my bedroom window and I succumbed to another one of the day’s secluded moments.

Ok so I’m not telling you where I found this cover, however if you download the song it won’t take Encyclopedia Brown to figure out this mystery. Regardless, it’s a good one. Fay Wolf takes a classic song and “makes it her own” (ugh, I hate that phrase) slowing it down and stripping it of its 1986 sounding roots. And on a personal note, after listening to this song my friend Mikey may have to rethink his funeral playlist we’ve all heard so much about

The original “I’ve Got A Feeling” is probably the most overplayed song of the past five years to the point where I audibly groan when it comes on. Sure, after a few drinks you can help but bounce a little but it really is an awful song. Don’t just tell me the days of the week, I know the order (although I don’t think Fergie spells in this song, so that’s a plus). But I digress. However, its redeeming quality comes in the form of I Am Noxious who has taken the track and stripped it down adding believability to the song that the original was lacking. He injects into what was a fluffy pop track some soul and heart taking out the silly lines and concentrating on the anticipation of gearing up for what could be a good, good night. He also samples “Meet Me Halfway” in the mid-8 which fits in perfectly with the tone and musicality of the song. In the end he takes a flat, over-produced track and creates something relevant and tangible and that is what makes a good, good artist.

Yes, yes, yes…it’s been a busy week for me and I haven’t posted anything. UNTIL NOW! I only have time to put up one cover today because I should be working but I couldn’t deprive you of this gem.
This is probably one of the only times you’ll ever read these words on this blog: don’t listen to the lyrics. This song doesn’t need them. I first heard it a few weeks ago and I’ve been enraptured ever since. Lykke Li does a superb job of taking a Kings of Leon song and making it her own. I especially enjoy the fact that she doesn’t take credit for it all by leaving some of the original vocals intact, adding a duet like quality to the song. Lykke Li’s vocals are strongest in the first half with an echo of the original shining through, then they flip around the three minute mark. Each half provides such a haunting quality that the listener can get sucked in and not realize what she has done here. There is a constant bass fuzz in the background that provides an amazing beat to groove to and, eventually, get lost in. And that tambourine during the chorus! When have you head a more infectious use of such a silly instrument (except perhaps in Eve’s aptly named “Tambourine”)? This is one of those perfect songs, it can be addictive, pleasurable, and highly intoxicating…make sure your ears use protection.
