Kings of Leon

It’s always interesting to see how a song can explode almost a year after it’s original release. Kings of Leon dropped their album Only by the Night in September ’08 but within the last month their single “Use Somebody” has been flying over the airwaves. As of today, it has also reached #11 on the Hot 100. I’m glad they’re finally getting the attention they deserve.

My other two favorites on their album bookend this song, creating a musical hat trick of sorts. “Manhattan” and “Sex On Fire” slip into the category of what critics call “too commercial” for this band (hey Pitchfork, enough already). But, why is that a bad thing? They’re songs you can sing along to, songs that you are excited to hear on the radio. “Sex On Fire” is gritty rock, “Use Somebody” is stadium-worthy. Nothing wrong with that. Ok, so they may not be the best band lyrically, but have you taken a look at what song is #1 on the charts right now? Don’t even get me started. Kings of Leon may have some growing up to do, but this album is definitely a step in the right direction.

Cover Me #2

Yes, yes, yes…it’s been a busy week for me and I haven’t posted anything. UNTIL NOW! I only have time to put up one cover today because I should be working but I couldn’t deprive you of this gem.

This is probably one of the only times you’ll ever read these words on this blog: don’t listen to the lyrics. This song doesn’t need them. I first heard it a few weeks ago and I’ve been enraptured ever since. Lykke Li does a superb job of taking a Kings of Leon song and making it her own. I especially enjoy the fact that she doesn’t take credit for it all by leaving some of the original vocals intact, adding a duet like quality to the song. Lykke Li’s vocals are strongest in the first half with an echo of the original shining through, then they flip around the three minute mark. Each half provides such a haunting quality that the listener can get sucked in and not realize what she has done here. There is a constant bass fuzz in the background that provides an amazing beat to groove to and, eventually, get lost in. And that tambourine during the chorus! When have you head a more infectious use of such a silly instrument (except perhaps in Eve’s aptly named “Tambourine”)? This is one of those perfect songs, it can be addictive, pleasurable, and highly intoxicating…make sure your ears use protection.
