Favorite songs of 2009

2009

In a year of great music it was pretty hard to narrow down my favorite songs of the year, but after multiple edits I think I’m pretty happy with my final list.

Comments are welcome and appreciated, let me know what you think, what I may have missed, and what your #1 song of the year was. If it was “Tardy for the Party” please submit your comment anonymously as I can’t promise I won’t slap your mouth the next time I see you. Click on the link here or visit the “Best of” section at the top. Here’s to 2010!

Music from the New Moon soundtrack

fall

Today is cold, colder than it has been so far. Summer had a good run but eventually had to fade. The beginning of Fall is a beautiful thing. The sunsets begin to come earlier, giving me time to watch them from my window. The leaves start to fade from a brilliant green to a paler shade. Then to yellow, then to orange, then to eventually fall at your feet bringing you that crunch-crunching sound you’ve missed. The air begins to have that slight scent of a lit fireplace and the crispness on your neck signals you to dig your jackets out of the untouched end of your closet.

Cover Me #2

Yes, yes, yes…it’s been a busy week for me and I haven’t posted anything. UNTIL NOW! I only have time to put up one cover today because I should be working but I couldn’t deprive you of this gem.

This is probably one of the only times you’ll ever read these words on this blog: don’t listen to the lyrics. This song doesn’t need them. I first heard it a few weeks ago and I’ve been enraptured ever since. Lykke Li does a superb job of taking a Kings of Leon song and making it her own. I especially enjoy the fact that she doesn’t take credit for it all by leaving some of the original vocals intact, adding a duet like quality to the song. Lykke Li’s vocals are strongest in the first half with an echo of the original shining through, then they flip around the three minute mark. Each half provides such a haunting quality that the listener can get sucked in and not realize what she has done here. There is a constant bass fuzz in the background that provides an amazing beat to groove to and, eventually, get lost in. And that tambourine during the chorus! When have you head a more infectious use of such a silly instrument (except perhaps in Eve’s aptly named “Tambourine”)? This is one of those perfect songs, it can be addictive, pleasurable, and highly intoxicating…make sure your ears use protection.
